Our Services at Wolverhampton Pregnancy Advisory Service
Consultation - is completely confidential and you will be given as much or as little time for discussion as you wish.
At WPAS and CWC we are committed to providing you with the highest standard of abortion care offering a choice of treatments. Our clinics are staffed by a dedicated team of highly qualified doctors, nurses and patient advisors who are there to advise and support you through your decisions and chosen treatment. You are free to call them at anytime for further help and information.
Ultrasound Scan
Scanning facilities are available at both treatment centres, the procedure is simple and provides an accurate and reliable measure of gestation (how many weeks pregnant you are).
As all of our clients are scanned at consultation we ask that you attend with a full bladder and not to use the toilet until your consultation and scan have been completed.
On arrival you will be welcomed by a dedicated member of staff who will explain the clinic procedure to you. An advisor will take some personal details from you and prepare case notes for the doctor. She will discuss your decision to terminate your pregnancy and will inform you of the choice of procedures available to you. She will also discuss Chlamydia Screening with you which is offered as part of the National Chlamydia Screening Programme to both males and females, free of charge.
The information you are given by the advisor will help you feel confident with the decision you have reached. However, you are free to change your mind at any time throughout your visit.
Due to patient confidentiality we prefer to see clients alone for consultation.
Unfortunately we are unable to accommodate children at the clinics.
Medical Assessment
It is essential that a doctor takes a full medical history from you. You will be asked about your general health and previous obstetric history. It is important that you tell the doctor if you are currently taking any kind of medication. The doctor will discuss the decision you have made and record your reasons for wanting to end your pregnancy. If satisfied that your reasons comply with the 1967 Abortion Act, the first part of the legal document will be signed by the doctor. The doctor will also ask you to read and sign a Consent to Treatment form. The doctor will check your blood pressure and do a finger prick blood test to check your haemoglobin and Rhesus status. If your blood group is Rhesus negative you will be given an injection during the course of your treatment called Anti D which prevents antibodies forming against a future pregnancy. The risks and complications of any treatment will be explained to you at the consultation with the doctor who will also assess your suitability for anaesthetic.
Discussion and Referral
Following your consultation, a patient advisor will establish whether you wish to proceed with treatment.
One-Stop Early Abortion Treatment
If you are under 9 weeks pregnant, you may decide to have an early medical abortion. If this is the case, the treatment is available at our clinic during your consultation with the doctor. You will be given a tablet to swallow, which will begin the first part of the process of ending your pregnancy. You will then be asked to sit and relax for 30 minutes in the Consultation Suite so that we can check that you feel well and have no adverse reaction to the medication. Before you leave the clinic you will be given an appointment time for the following day to complete the second part of the procedure.
Treatment Centre
If you decide to have a general anaesthetic you will be referred to one of our specialist treatment centres. The Advisor will confirm your admission date with you she will give you a brochure that will explain what to take with you on the day and what instructions you will need to follow in preparation for your treatment.
Contraception
The doctors and Advisors will discuss contraception with you during consultation. Depo Provera (3 monthly injection) and Implanon can be administered during the second part of your treatment.
Free Chlamydia
Screening
Available to both male and female and offered as a free walk-in service, 9am - 5pm Monday to Friday.
If your test proves positive both you and your partner will require treatment as soon as possible in order to prevent any complications. www.rusureblackcountry.nhs.uk
