Causes and Symptoms
Trichomoniasis is caused by tiny parasites that infect the vagina and urethra.
It is an infection that usually affects women but men can be infected through sexual intercourse.
Symptoms in men are rare but may include:
- A mild discharge from the penis
- Irritation and pain
- Discomfort during intercourse or when passing urine
Women often experience:
- Discomfort or pain during intercourse or passing urine
- Irritation and itching in the genital area
- Yellow, green or grey discharge which is often frothy and has a strong odour
- Some women may experience lower abdominal pain, but this is rare
Treatment
Trichomoniasis is treated with antibiotics.
It is important to remember that antibiotics can affect the effectiveness of certain contraceptives such as The Pill or the contraceptive patch so an alternative method should be used.
You should abstain from sexual intercourse until the treatment is complete to avoid re-infection.
