Thrush

Causes and Symptoms
Thrush is an extremely common yeast infection.

The vagina naturally maintains a certain level of yeast at all times. Thrush occurs when there has been an increase in the amount of yeast produced.

It is also known as candidiasis and it is not necessarily transmitted through sexual intercourse, but can also be caused by antibiotics, perfumed products and contraceptives.

Approximately 3 in 4 women will have a bout of thrush at some point in their lives.

Women with thrush will experience:

  • A thick white discharge
  • Itching
  • Swelling and soreness of the vulva (outer area of the vagina)
  • Burning sensation when passing urine
  • Pain or discomfort during intercourse.

Men with thrush will experience:

  • Pain when passing urine
  • The tip of the penis can be sore and itchy with red spots
  • The foreskin can be difficult to pull back and a cheese like discharge may come from the penis

Treatment
Treatment is through an anti-fungal cream for men and women.

Women may also be given a vaginal pessary to treat the internal infection.
