Non-specific Urethritis

Causes and Symptoms
Non-specific urethritis is an infection that is often caused by chlamydia. There are other causes but this is found to be the infection in over half the cases discovered in men.

The urethra (tube that urine passes through) can become inflamed causing redness, swelling and pain.

Women often show no symptoms.

In men it is the tube in the penis where urine and semen pass through and their symptoms may include:

  • Discharge from the penis
  • Irritation or burning inside the penis
  • A burning sensation when urinating

Treatment
Non-specific Urethra is treated with antibiotics.

It is important to remember that antibiotics can affect the effectiveness of certain contraceptives such as The Pill or the contraceptive patch so an alternative method should be used.

You should abstain from sexual intercourse until the treatment is complete to avoid re-infection.

It is important to be tested as if left untreated and the underlying cause is discovered to be chlamydia it can cause pelvic inflammatory disease and other health implications (see chlamydia).
