Welcome to

Stoke Pregnancy Advisory Service

Early medical abortion (EMA) is now available at Stoke PAS. This method is suitable for women up to 9 weeks of pregnancy and can be administered as soon as the pregnancy is confirmed by the ultrasound scan. Two appointments are needed as medication is taken over a two-day period. The second appointment will be 24 hours after the first tablet is taken.

An appointment to arrange long-acting reversible contraception (Depo Provera, IUDs, Mirena IUSs or Implanon) to be fitted is available to you 3 weeks after your treatment and following an ultrasound scan. This appointment will be made for you when you attend for your second stage of treatment.

Consultation
When you arrive at the clinic you will need to book in at reception. The receptionist will give you a clipboard and pen, and ask you to complete a Health Questionnaire before we can begin your consultation. You will also given some important information to read, regarding your treatment.

You and your supporter will be directed to the waiting area until your name is called.

When you made your appointment you will have been advised to attend the clinic with a full bladder, it is important that you do not go to the toilet until you are told to do so.

Initially you will have a scan to assess the gestation of you pregnancy (how many weeks pregnant you are); this will help us to establish which treatment maybe suitable for you. Following your scan you will be called to see a Patient Advisor who will discuss your pregnancy with you. When she has established that you wish to proceed with the consultation appointment, she will complete some personal details. She will also measure your height and weight and calculate your body mass index. You will also have a blood sample taken using a finger prick test

Your consultation will be treated on a one-to-one basis in the utmost confidence.

Please feel free to ask the advisor any questions you may have, she will do her best to help and advise you in anyway that she can.

Consultation fees or Health Authority (NHS) funding for your treatment will be confirmed at the time of booking your initial appointment. If you are a private patient, your consultation fee will need to be paid before your appointment for treatment is made.

Once your consultation is complete, you will be asked to take a seat in the waiting area until the nurse or doctor is ready to see you.

You will be seen by a doctor or nurse who will ask you for details about your past and present medical history. It is necessary to complete this prior to any treatment you have. The doctor or nurse will also check your blood pressure and listen to your heart and lungs.

Medical Assessment
Once your medical consultation is complete and you are suitable for treatment, an advisor will discuss the most appropriate procedure for your gestation. You will be offered the first available appointment at one of our clinics.
