Medical Termination of Pregnancy

Prostaglandin Method (PG)

If you are:

  • 16 - 20 weeks
  • not suitable for the abortion pill
  • unable to attend the clinic on 3 separate occasions

then this method may be more suited to you.

This procedure involves an overnight stay during which time a hormone known as Prostaglandin is administered via a catheter which is inserted through the cervix (neck of womb) into the uterus.  This procedure is supervised throughout by a midwife. The treatment brings about the termination by inducing miscarriage.

A medical termination is recommended for patients with a late pregnancy and particularly for those who have not been pregnant before, because the risk of injury to the cervix is reduced.
