Vasectomy
We
offer consultation, assessment and operation in a single, daycare
visit.
The operation involves removing a short section of the tubes which
transport the sperm from the testes to the exterior. A small incision
is made on each side of the scrotum. These incisions are closed
with dissolving stitches and a plastic spray dressing applied
. The procedure takes only a few minutes and is usually done under
a local anaesthetic. The local anaesthetic works for several hours,
allowing the patient to travel home after the operation without
any discomfort.
We recommend that you do not drive yourself home after the procedure.
Driving immediately after a local anaesthetic may have
implications for your vehicle insurance.
A general anaesthetic can be arranged, but this
is best avoided unless there are medical reasons.
After the operation normal sexual activity will use up any remaining
sperm in the tubes. To ensure that this has happened, two specimens
of semen (at 12 and 16 weeks after operation) are requested from
the patient. These semen samples must be free of sperm before
we can give the "all clear". Vasectomy should be regarded as an
irreversible procedure.
