Termination
of Pregnancy
General Anaesthetic
If
you are under 16 weeks pregnant, the method used for termination
of pregnancy is called vacuum aspiration, which involves gently
stretching the cervix (neck of womb) with dilators, then removing
the contents of the womb through a suction tube inserted into
the vagina. Prior to your operation the anaesthetist will give
you
an injection into the back of your hand that will send you off
to sleep. If you are 15-19 weeks pregnant, dilatation and evacuation
(D&E) may be performed if you are medically suitable. The
cervix is gently stretched and the contents of the womb removed.
Please
note: This method may not be suitable if your pregnancy has
exceeded 16 weeks and you have not been pregnant before. A
medical termination is recommended in this instance.
Surgical terminations may be performed as a day-care procedure if the medical
staff feel you are fit to be discharged later that day. Discharge times
differ depending on the length of the pregnancy and also on the anaesthetic
used. Patients will be advised on these matters when admitted.
