How long will I be at the Clinic on the day of the operation?
This will depend on which procedure you have. It could be anything from a couple of hours up to around 7 hours. This will be discussed at your consultation.
Is the consultation necessary if I already know what I want to do?
Yes, there is a legal requirement that you see a client advisor and a doctor, and two doctors’ signatures are necessary on the relevant forms.
Do I have to be examined internally?
Not usually: however if a scan is unclear or is unavailable an internal examination would then be necessary but only if you give your permission.
Will the client advisor try to talk me out of it?
No: the client advisors are trained to listen to you, provide information and support and never judge you or ask you to justify your reasons for wanting an abortion.
What if I am breastfeeding?
If you have an early medical, it is recommended that you stop breastfeeding for 14 days from the first day of treatment. If you are having a surgical procedure under general anaesthetic, please wait 24 hours after the anaesthetic before starting breastfeeding again.
Sterilisation FAQs
Will I have stitches and if so, when do they need to come out?
You will have sutures but they dissolve over time so there is no need to return to the Clinic.
Will there be any pain?
You will have some referral pain in your back and/or shoulders. This is due to a build-up of gas during the operation. Some peppermint in hot water or gaviscon will help ease the discomfort.
Is the sterilisation 100% reliable?
Nothing is 100% safe but conception is extremely rare.
When can I have intercourse?
We advise that you wait 4-6 weeks before you resume intercourse.
Can I have a bath/shower?
Although you may feel like it, it is not advisable to soak in the bath; a shower is best and you should cover the wound with cling film so as not to get it wet.
When can I take the dressing off?
After 2-3 days
When you are discharged you will be given extra dressings to apply.
Vasectomy FAQs
How long does the operation take?
Usually between 12-15 minutes. With registration, counselling and a short rest following you operation we hope you visit will be no longer than two hours.
What is the recover period and how long will I need off work?
The recovery period is different for each client.
If you follow the guidelines (you’ll be given a copy when you are discharged), and you have an office based job, you should be fit enough to return to work after the weekend. clients who have a very physical job, or one which involves heavy lifting etc, are advised to take a week off before returning to work.
When can I start running / going to the gym / general exercise?
Gentle exercise is good and you can continue this over the weekend if you feel up to it. For more physical sports it is best to take a week off and then start slowly, gradually working up to your normal level. Your best guide is to listen to your body.
How soon can I resume intercourse?
You probably won’t even think about it for a day or two, but you can start again as soon as you feel comfortable.

How soon after a missed period can I have a test?
Immediately – the latest tests are very sensitive.
Can I have a test before a missed period?
Yes
Do I need to bring a first morning urine specimen?
If possible yes as this will provide the most accurate result.
Is there a charge for this test?
No.
Can I have a negative test and still be pregnant?
Nowadays pregnancy tests are very sensitive and a ‘false negative’ is unlikely unless it is a very early pregnancy. It may occur very occasionally with some tests. If in doubt you can have a second test two or three days later.

Contraception FAQ’s
How long does an IUD/IUS last?
This is between five and ten years depending on which IUD you have fitted. The T-Safe coil (IUD) lasts for 10 years. The Mirena Coil (IUS) lasts and is licensed for 5 years. Our client advisors are trained to advise you on which option is the best for your circumstances.
Can I have a Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptive fitted when having an abortion?
You can have a contraceptive implant, or an injection, or an IUD/IUS fitted when you have an abortion. Nexplanon (implant) and Depo-Provera (injection) can be arranged at the time of an abortion. Our surgeons can also fit (or if necessary remove) the Mirena coil (IUS) and conventional Intra-Uterine Devices (IUDs).
